What is zentangle?
Zentangle is a fun and relaxed way of drawing structured repetitive patters to make images. Zentangle is usually done with a black pen on white paper.
Lot of us have the habit of doodling on the margins. While doodling is random, zentangle is more structured.
Zentangle for kids
Zentangling is therapeutic, relaxing and calming. It makes the kids more focussed and increases their attention span.
For very young kids, start with a square or circle and ask them to fill it in with lines, checks or even smaller circles. Show them how they can create patterns. This is purely to make them understand how a zentangle looks like. Let them use their imagination to come up with their own patterns.
What do you need to zentangle?
You will need
- Zentangle sheets (You can download the sheets I used from here or create your own from here)
- Black sharpie marker
Zentangle using graph paper
When I initially gave a graph paper to my younger one, he only wanted to color. I let him do that. It is important not to push kids to do something until they are ready for that. The next time, I gave him the same paper, he wanted to try some drawings inside the blocks. I plan to give him a sheet every month and see how his drawings change over a period of time.
While reading about Zentangle, I came across some pictures of zentangle done on graph paper. It seemed like a simple way to introduce zentangle to kids. I also came across this awesome site that lets you create your own graph paper. It lets you choose the shape, adjust the shape and size and design the graph paper the way you want. I designed few sheets for my kids and printed them out.

This is a zentangle he did on origami paper.
If you are not using graph paper, You could draw random squiggles and start covering each block with patterns.
